Learn About Vaping: Whiy Vaping Is Popular Among Teens?

teen girl vaping.

Vaping has become a popular substitute for the traditional methods of smoking, and the majority of the vaping teens make the mistake of assuming that vaping is not as harmful as tobacco, and cannot harm their overall mental and physical well0being. Well, they are quite wrong. Vaping is, if not more, as harmful as tobacco itself.

Over the past few years, with the advent of “cool” and popular e-cigarettes, the majority of teenagers tend to invest their time and money into JUUL and other vaping activities without giving it a second thought. According to the FDA, in the year 2017, more than 2.1 million kids from high schools and middle schools were daily users of e-cigarettes, and this number is slowly increasing day by day.

If we, as adults, want to understand the consequence of vaping, we need to take a look at why do teenagers prefer vaping, how is this a bad habit for them and how to explain the negative impacts of vaping to the teenagers. Let’s take a look.

Why Is Vaping Popular Among Teens?

We, as humans, are visual creatures, and we can easily be enticed by marketing techniques, advertisements, and other social media outlets. Well, the majority of the vaping ads promote the concept of vaping in teens by using kid-friendly and teen-friendly marketing ads, appeals, and other forms of promotions.

These ads are clearly and directly targeted at people between the ages of 15 to 24, and not a single ad openly states that e-cigarettes also contain high levels of nicotine in a juice form. Moreover, the vaping devices are also designed to look cool while holding, and teenagers are more attracted to the vaping device itself as well.

According to Sarper Taskiran, MD, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Child Mind Institute, teenagers are actually attracted to the overall design of the vaping devices. He said, “The teens are after innovation, and they’re attracted by sleek design and ease of use. They look like an Apple product.”

At the end of the day, peer pressure also plays an essential role in vaping. A lot of teenagers pick up vaping because everybody at their school is doing it.

Is Vaping a Risky Habit?

In simple words, Yes. If you are looking for an answer to “Is vaping bad for teens?”, you should know that it is, if not more, just as harmful for kids as normal cigarettes are. Moreover, since these e-cigarettes contain chemicals other than just nicotine as well, the teenagers don’t even know what they are inhaling, and that can have some long-lasting or harmful consequences on their health. Let’s take a look:

  • These e-cigarette pods contain as much nicotine as a single pack of cigarettes would. That means that every pod can contain as much nicotine as 20 regular cigarettes do.
  • High levels of nicotine slow down the development of mental and physical aspects in teenagers, and it also impacts their remembrance, attentiveness, learning, self-control, responsiveness, and temper in a negative manner.
  • High levels of nicotine make teenagers vulnerable to other addictions later on in life.
  • Vaping can damage the lungs in the long run, and may even cause death.

Explaining The Risks to Your Kid

If you are a parent, and you are wondering, “should I let my teenager vape?”, the answer is NO. You will only be making them vulnerable to other addictions later on in life, and letting them destroy their own life in the process. As a parent, it is your responsibility to control their addictions and explain the risks of vaping to your teenagers and kids.

According to Dr. Taskiran, the best way to talk to your kids is by understanding everything by yourself and turning the conversation into a proper dialogue. He says, “The most important thing is keeping it as a dialogue. Declarative statements like ‘It’s bad for you’ just end the conversation.”

So, when talking to your kids, make sure to hear their concerns as well. Ask them why they started doing it, and what you can do to help them make it quit. Try to educate them about the harmful consequences of vaping in teens, and slowly help them get rid of this habit. If you are powerless to make your teen stop vaping seek help from teen drug addiction treatment specialists.
