Kata Tips

This page includes full instructions on how to learn Basic Form #1. The name of this kata is "Geicho Hyung Il Bu." It is important to learn these techniques, as well as any techniques, under the guidance of a qualified instructor. The instructions contained on this page, as well as any other page on this site, are for review purposes and are NOT intended to replace the instructions of a teacher.


Start from a Ready Stance.

Step 1 - Look left. Quarter turn low block.

Step 2 - Raise your hand to the center. Stepping Center Punch.

Step 3 - Look to your right. Half turn low block.

Step 4 - Raise your hand to the center. Stepping Center Punch.

Step 5 - Look left. Quarter turn low block.

Step 6 - Raise your hand to the center. Stepping Front kick, center punch.

Step 7 - Stepping Front kick, center punch.

Step 8 - Stepping Front kick, center punch with a kiai.

Step 9 - Look left. Three quarter turn low block.

Step 10 - Raise your hand to the center. Stepping Center Punch.

Step 11 - Look to your right. Half turn low block.

Step 12 - Raise your hand to the center. Stepping Center Punch.

Step 13 - Look left. Quarter turn low block.

Step 14 - Raise your hand to the center. Stepping Front kick, center punch.

Step 15 - Stepping Front kick, center punch.

Step 16 - Stepping Front kick, center punch with a kiai.

Step 17 - Look left. Three quarter turn low block.

Step 18 - Raise your hand to the center. Stepping Center Punch.

Step 19 - Look to your right. Half turn low block.

Step 20 - Raise your hand to the center. Stepping Center Punch.

Look to your left. Return to Ready Stance.

Things to remember:

* There are eight opponents in the kata.
* On the third and sixth opponent, do three front kick/punch combinations.
* Remember, whichever shoulder you look over, that hand folds on top for the low block.
* Whichever shoulder you look over, that leg will step for the turn.
* When turning, always step out on the ball of the foot, heel facing up.
* There are only two kiai's in the kata (after the front kick/punch combinations).
* After you kiai, execute a 3/4 turn.
* A "set" is a defense and a counter-attack against an opponent. There are eight in this kata (one set for each opponent).
* The half turn is ALWAYS to the right. The quarter and three quarter turns are ALWAYS to the left.
* You should finish at the same point you started.
