Education has been a priority in the Philippines for decades, and this is evidenced in the fact that many of the advancements in education in Asia have been pioneered in the Philippines.  In fact, the Philippines was home to the first modern public schooling system in Asia.  It is also home to the oldest universities, colleges, and vocational schools.  While controlled by colonial rule for several years, once the Philippines gained their independence they took over control of the educational system and began to move it in their own direction.  Children in the Philippines are educated in the primary and secondary school systems for about thirteen to fourteen years, depending on when they start, after which they complete the College Entrance Examinations, that allow them to qualify for one of the many institutions of higher learning.  There are both private and public schools in the Philippines, and on the whole the education provided by the private schools is much more comprehensive than that provided by the public school system.

When the Spanish first arrived in the Philippines, education of the indigenous people was mainly viewed as the duty of religious organizations.  Parish friars put forth great effort to teach the indigenous people to read believing that literacy was the key to better lifestyles.  During the 16^th century the Franciscans, Jesuits, and Augustinians all established schools in the Philippines.  Later on during American rule the first public schooling was set up and more than 1,000 teachers came from the United States between 1901 and 1902.  During this time a university was also established to train native Filipino teachers.

During the 1970′s and 1980′s President Marcos decentralized the office that oversaw education in the Philippines, and it eventually became the Ministry of Education and Culture.  In subsequent years laws and referendums have been drafted to improve the quality of the education provided by the public schooling system.  These include initiatives for the accreditation of universities and vocational schools, as well as upgrades in the qualifications for teachers and administrators.  The education system in the Philippines has quite the storied history and if the educational reforms that are currently being pushed for can pass, then it can continue to live up to its impressive past.

Students from the Philippines make up a large part of the population of many universities.  The strong influence of the American school system has had a profound effect on the Philippine school system, and the result has been that a high level of importance has been placed on receiving a thorough education.  What programs of study are popular among this particular demographic?  One of the most popular fields of study is the medical, specifically to train as a licensed physician.  In fact, the American Medical Association (AMA) recently reported that Philippine-trained physicians make up the second-largest foreign trained group of physicians in the United States.  In another branch of the medical field Philippine-trained dentists are also the second largest foreign-trained group of dentists in the United States.  It is very apparent that the medical field is a consistently popular choice among students from the Philippines.

This leaning toward the health care sciences extends to nursing, physical therapy, and medical technology.  During the Vietnam War and at the start of the AIDS epidemic, the need for foreign-trained nurses grew dramatically and much of this need was filled by Philippine-trained nurses.  Though their numbers have decreased over the years they still make up a very large percentage of those who apply for their licensing as a registered nurse every year.

Another field that is popular among students from the Philippines is the field of education, to the extent that some states in the United States have looked to the Philippines to recruit teachers.  The similarity in the educational structures, as mentioned earlier due to the influence of American educational principles during the colonial years, has allowed teachers from the Philippines to acclimate much more rapidly to the American educational system.

While there are certain fields that are more popular for students from the Philippines to choose, really the options are many for those entering their university career.  It is important to have a desire to be in the field that you choose to go into.  It is important to bring a level of passion to you work; it will help you to have a long and successful career in your chosen profession.

Today it seems that everyone is making movies including every country out there and the Asian culture has not been left out. There are many movies being produced each day that are influenced by Asian pop culture that can allow you to see the world from the Asian prospective.

While many movies from Asian pop culture used to be mostly fighting films or something of that sort many genres have now popped up onto the surface of the film world. Teaching kids new ideas and concepts is just one of the many reasons why I love my job so much. I never thought that I would have such a good time with high school students, but they are at a great age to really communicate well and soak up so much information. Manila is a big city, especially when you’re from a small village in the country. I was overwhelmed when I got here. So many people!  There are so many buildings and cars and buses and noise. But the University is here, and if I’m going to honor the wishes of my family and get the education they sacrificed so much for, then I will be here, far away from them, and I will study.

A few years ago my roommate was an exchange student from the United Kingdom. She loved the Philippines and really enjoyed living here, but she missed the sporting aspect of her home life.
